For almost 20 years, IceHouse Design has worked with clients such as the Captain Planet Foundation of Turner Broadcasting, the High Museum of Art, IBM, the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, and Yale University. Most of our current projects are for organizations in the arts, education, humanities, and the non-profit sector. In addition to our web and print design practice, we write books, publish artist’s books, conduct workshops and teach graphic design at the university level.
BJORN
AKSELSEN moved to the U.S. from Norway to continue a lifelong intellectual search, and shelter himself from reality in the halls of academia. This pursuit took him to places, such as Atlanta (where he met his wife and partner, Pattie Belle), Boston, New York City, and finally, Yale University. Since finishing his MFA in graphic design at Yale, Bjorn continues to lead Icehouse Design, specializing in education, arts, and the humanities. His work has been published in books such as Typographics 2 (London), New Logo & Trademark Design (Tokyo), Limited Color Graphics (Tokyo), Illustrator Wow Book (U.S.), and in magazines such as Visuelt (Norway) and Print’s Regional Design Annual (U.S.). His work has been exhibited in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, Germany, and ArtSpace in New Haven, Connecticut. His work was recently in Outside In, and international poster exhibit. PATTIE
BELLE HASTINGS (PB) was quick to get her hands on a Mac in the mid-eighties and since then, has been experimenting with technology, art and the gender issues involved in both. In addition to beeing an accomplished designer and artist, she teaches and lectures across the country. PB also maintains a close connection with more tactile and traditional art media, and has an extensive publishing and exhibition record. Her titles, such as If You Sleep on the Other Side, It Will go Away (Nexus Press, Atlanta), Alaska; Trail Tales and Eccentric Detours (Icehouse Press) and Elegy: An Intuitive Chronicle of War (Icehouse Press), have been exhibited internationally and are in many prestigious collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art Library, Harvard College Library, Yale University Art of the Book Collection, and the New York Public Library Rare Books Collection. The duality between traditional methods and digital frontiers may seem odd to many, but to PB it is the essence of a career that refuses to be media specific. Her artwork is frequently on the cusp of activist orientation, garnering support and grants from city and state cultural agencies and institutions such as the NEA’s regional awards (Southern Arts Federation). It is in this capacity that she has published books such as Barrier Island—a politically charged volume about a threatened natural ecologic system—with Bjorn, and Linda Armstrong. In addition to her work, artists’ book career, and design practice, PB’s teaching career spans almost 20 years. She is currently Associate Professor of Interactive Digital Design at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. Wonder how she does it all? PB even gives workshops on time management for creative people.
